Opener Javeria Khan and leg-break bowler Bismah Maroof took Pakistan to a nine-wicket victory over Ireland in their fifth ODI match of the Women’s Quadrangular Series, which the girls in green won at the Thurstan College Ground in Colombo on Friday.
Pakistan won the toss and put Ireland in to bat first. The 50 overs had to be reduced once again due to rain and the game was made a 23 overs-a-side affair.
Ireland got off to a good start what with three fours by opener C.M.A. Shillington but their happiness was short-lived when wickets on the other end started falling in quick succession before Shillington, too, was dismissed for 19 off 23 balls. L. Delany (20) was the topscorer of the innings as the 17 extras presented by Pakistan’s bowlers became the only other sum reaching double figures.
Pakistan skipper Sana Mir tried six bowlers including herself of whom Bismah Maroof remained the most successful and economical when she claimed four wickets while giving away just seven runs off her 4.1 overs. The rest, namely, Qanita Jalil, Masooma Junaid, Sadia Yousuf, Nida Dar and Sana got one wicket each. And thanks to two run-outs Ireland were bowled out for 68 runs in 22.1 overs.
In reply, Pakistan’s women easily chased the target to make 70, while only losing one wicket, that of Nida Dar, with 9.3 overs remaining.
Javeria Khan, who has really worked on her batting ever since she was banned from bowling due to her action, scored a 50ball 47 studded with three fours. Bismah Maroof played the role of a good back-up as she let Javeria to mostly stay on strike.
Summarised scores: IRELAND 68 in 22.1 overs (C.M.A. Shillington 19, L. Delany 20; Bismah Maroof 4-7); PAKISTAN 70-1 in 13.3 overs (Javeria Khan 47, Bismah Maroof 12).
