Knights in six-team qualifier for CLT20

The Kolkata Knight Riders may have finished fourth in the Indian Premier League this year, but the new format won’t stop them from participating in this year’s Champions League Twenty20.

A record 13 teams will be seen in action in this year’s CLT20, which will be held across three cities — Calcutta, Chennai and Bangalore — from September 19 to October 9. Before the ‘real’ tournament kicks off on September 23, a six-team qualifier will be played in Hyderabad from September 19 to 21 to decide the final three teams that qualify for the main event.

Three teams from the qualifying stage will join the seven who’ve already qualified and play out the format used in 2010. The sides in the main round will be divided into two groups of five, with the top two from each qualifying for the semi-finals.

The Kolkata Knight Riders, the Caribbean T20 champions Trinidad and Tobago and the HRV Cup — New Zealand’s domestic Twenty20 competition — title-winners Auckland Aces will participate in the qualifiers. The champions of controversial Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) and two from England will join them. However, the format for the qualifiers is yet to be decided.

The qualifiers clash with the third Test between Sri Lanka and Australia. In that case, KKR might be deprived of the Aussie players on national duty. The seven teams that have automatically qualified are IPL champions and defending CL T20 champions Chennai Super Kings, IPL runners-up Royal Challengers Bangalore, third placed Mumbai Indians.According to a media release, Bangalore will host the inaugural match of the third edition on September 23, it will also host a semi-final.

Chennai will host a semi-final and the final slated on October 9.The other four teams are South Australian Redbacks and New South Wales Blues from Australia, Warriors and Cape Cobras from South Africa.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said the winner of its domestic Twenty20 tournament, which BCCI views as an event being organised by a private party, will compete in the Champions League T20 qualifiers.
