'You need to have a winning mindset ' : Taylor

Ross Taylor, New Zealand's newly appointed captain, will follow Shane Warne as his role model in leading his side to success. Although New Zealand's ranking in the recent years have fallen down, Taylor hopes that his side adopts an aggressive approach to cricket.

"Warnie is one of the most aggressive captains. One of the things I learnt from Warnie and admired about him was trying to get the best out of the team and individuals, and just winning from anywhere," Taylor told this week. "If you have a mindset of winning from any situation then more often than not those tight games will go your way."

New Zealand's recent performances have clearly shown their defensive and poor approach to cricket . New Zealand have won just 2 of their 21 tests since October 2008 and even those wins were against a relatively weak test side like Bangladesh and a formidable test outfit like Pakistan. New Zealand have not won a test away from home from more than a decade against the top 8 test nations.

"I think sometimes we probably did feel that a draw was as good as a win," Taylor said. "The way Test cricket is going there are not a lot of draws these days. The only time there are draws are if the wicket is really flat or if the weather plays a part. More often than not, the way Test cricket is played, Tests are won more often than not. We need to have that mindset. If we go out there just to draw series then we're going to get ourselves into trouble. If we go out there to win, it's a nice positive mindset to have."

Taylor knows how their side have lacked the vigor of a test nation and have fallen down from the top to 8th in the rankings. However, when being optimistic, Taylor does have a chance to begin his career on a winning note as they are soon going to face Zimbabwe in tests. With a new captain and a new coach, it may well be the beginning of the time when New Zealand real passion for cricket returns.
